FIRE.
About 1 r o’clock last night an alarm was rung on the borough fire bell (the only means we obtain, by the way, in the matter of fire fighting appliances.) A flare was noticed at the south end of Mainstreet, which proved to be some burning timber in Mr R. N. Speirs’ timber yards. Willing hands were soon at work fighting the fiery element, which was successfully got under, but not before about 3,000 ft. of dry flooring and match-lining had been destroyed. It appears that a fire had been alight in the yard during the day, which Mr Speirs thought he had extinguished at about 9 p.m. A breeze, however, sprung up, and fanned some sparks into a flame and the particles were carried beneath some timber, which soon ignited.
