MANAWATU COUNTY COUNCIL.

The annual report and balancesheet of the Manawatu County Council states that the bank overdraft has been reduced during the year from £983 4s nd to ,£722 os 1 id, showing a credit balance of 4s on the year’s working. Avvahou Riding.—At first it was thought that a similar rate to that of last year would be sufficient, but the damage done by recent floods in the Manawatu will cause heavy expenditure. Whirokino Sub-Division. —The separate rate of struck over this portion of the Awahou Riding last year was not sufficient for the upkeep of roads and bridges. Therefore the actual working ,of the tramway for the twelve months represented a credit of .£173 is rod. The lifting and re-laying with 401 b rails of the line along the Carnarvon incline for 42 chains has been finished. It is proposed to carry the work to the top of’ the hill during the present year. To do this, another 25 tons of 401 b rails will be required. The old fails taken up have been used for renewals between Rosina and Himitangi in place of those condemned by the Government Permanent Way Inspector. PALMERSTON-FOXTGN MAIN ROAD. This road has been completed now, all but a length of 60 chains, and an application has been made to Government for a further, grant towards the road. If the application for grant is successful, the Council, recognising the importance of the work, propose to make a further grant from general rates, and complete the road. WHIROKINO BRIDGE. This bridge, which is now under the control of the Council, has been badly damaged by the recent floods in the Manawatu river. A quite unexpected scour has taken place under the bridge, and the depth of water at the three centre piers is 27ft, about double what it was when the bridge was built. The additional piles driven in 1904 have held well, and are now the principal factors in holding the bridge. It is proposed to obtain 20 piles, 55ft long, and-drive them in each ot the four centre piers, bracing them under water with iron rods, and bolting them to the existing piers. The piles will be driven 26ft below the present bed of the river. NEW WORKS. The Council have raised loans under “The Local Bodies Loans Act, 1901,” as under: for the construction of drainage works at Kaikokopu Lakes, security to be a special rate over the Oroua Downs Drainage Special Rating’ District.
