BOROUGH SANITARY MATTERS.
A knotty problem.
Sanitary matters again toook np much of the Council’s attention at last night’s meeting. Two letters were read complaining of the unsatisfactory manner in which the work was being carried out. One Main street resident stated • that he had been compelled to bury the filth in his 3 r ard. He considered this a menance to the public health and the local authority could thank the sandy soil that no epidemic had broken out. The writer said that the annoying part was that he heard the cart rumble pass his premises. Verbal complaints had been numerous. A complaint was also received from the Stationmaster and Post Office. A resident in the Lady’s Mile also asked that his premises be included in the nightsoil area. A lengthy discussion ensued in which it was pointed out that the contractor should not be allowed to accept payment from persons outside the area for removals as ho was paid to do certain work in a prescribed area by the Council. One Councillor suggested that the work could be done more expeditiously if the contractor was provided with a carrying pan. Cr Gray said residents were also negligent in not providing proper receptacles and they expected the contractor to do the work with a shovel. In reply to this it was urged that such persons should be prosecuted. It was finally resolved that complaints be shown to the contractor, and he be requested to carry out his duties in a more thorough manner, and he also be informed that the post office and railway station is within the area. With reference to 'the application from a resident to be included in the area it was decided that the Council could not at present see its way to accede to the request. It was pointed out that it would be necessary at an early date to increase the area.
