BOROUGH COUNCIL.

Ordinary Meeting.

The ordin'ary meeting of the above was held in the Council Chambers last evening. Present : His Worship the Mayor (B. G. Gower Esq.) and Crs Gray, G. Coley, L. W. Wilson, P. Hennessy and Baker. Apologies for absence were received from Crs Frankland and Stiles.

Correspondence was read and dealt with as follows : —From Town Clerk, Wellington, acknowledging receipt ol two guineas to Seddon National Memorial Fund. From Horowhenua County Clerk re Council’s progress payment towards erection of bridge at Shannon Ferry.—Councillors were of opinion that the call was somewhat previous and the matter was held over for the present. Two petitions were read from ratepayers and householders in the vicinity of the Avenue, Coky, and Jenks Streets, re surface water and asking that something be done to release the water, —Crs Hennessy and Wilson also spoke of the urgent necessity for action in dealing with drainage in the vicinity of Norbiton and Spring Streets. —Cr Wilson also spoke of the disgraceful state of Liddel Street. After discussion, Crs Gray and Coley moved that the Works Committee meet at Jenks Street on Monday, 15th inst.,at 2 p.ra., and make an inspection of all the localities mentioned and report as to what action should be taken. The Treasury wrote sanctioning the application of the loan for rebuilding portion of Whirokino bridge. Cr Baker —Henessy moved That the Chairman of Manawatu County Council be informed that this Council approves of the repairs to the Whirokino Bridge being carried out unconditionally as requested—Carried. On the motion ofCr Hennessy, it was decided to approve of certain resolutions forwarded by tradespeople at Invercargill re fixing of half-holiday so that banks, factories, shops, etc., all observe the one day. A letter was received from the District Railway Superintendent asking whether the Council intended to go on with the site for water works, near the windmill. It was explained that the Council at one time contemplated sinking an artesian bore at the spot mentioned. —The Council did not appear anxious to take any steps in the matter. —Cr Coley humorously suggested sending along the rent. The Mayor : What rent ? —Cr. Coley: A few peppercorns. It was to be a peppercorn rental! (laughter).—Cr Gray stated that a well sinker had offered to, put down an artesian bore near the pound cottage for a sum ot£Bo on the,condition no water, no pay. —On the motion of Crs Hennessy and Baker it was decided ;to inform the Railway Department that the Council does not intend to go on with the work at present. S. Massena wrote complaining of filth being deposited in the rubbish depot, near his premises, which -was very offensive. —Surprise was expressed by the Council that any such nuisance existed, and it was resolved on the motion of Crs Hennessy and Baker that the Inspector of Nuisances’ attention be called to the matter. Cr Gray moved and Cr Coley seconded, That the drain leading from the Catholic Church along Union St, to Nye St. be cleared out, and the owners of property draining over the footpath be given notice to put culverts under same, and if the overseer requires the services of another man, he be authorised to employ one. — Carried.

Cr Coley moved and Cr Gray seconded, That tenders be called for a room, say 24 x 30, for the purpose of storing band instruments, and use of band generally, and the Clerk be instructed to draw out plans and specifications. Cost of same to be taken out of Reserves Fund Account, Site to be determined by Council Carried. —Cr Coley said the bandsmen complained that they had no room for practising. If this work was carried out the instruments would then be in safe keeping . and insured, and the key of the I building would be held by the I Council’s caretaker. ) The various' reports were read and accounts passed for payment. On the motion of Crs. Baker and Hennessy, it was resolved to call tenders for the erection of a fourroomed cottage on the pound reserve. Tenders for the same to be in before next monthly meeting. —lt was thought undesirable to make alterations to the present pound cottage, by reason of its age. The cost of erection to be paid out of Reseves’ Fund Account. It was resolved to call tenders for removal of trees at the cemetery, the Clerk to draw up the necessary specifications. The Mayor brought up the question of removal of Nye’s bridge. He was of opinion that the cost of removal should be borne equally by the County Council, Nr Nye, h and the Borough Council, each ~\ party to put on a man to carry out the work. The matter of ranging between the Borough and County was left with the Mayor to deal with. On the motion of Cr Hennessy, seconded by Cr Baker, it was decided to call tenders for concrete kerbing, also alternate for channelling and kerbing.—lt was also decided to instruct Mr Alzdorf to take the levels at once. The meeting rose at 9,55 p.m.
