CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.
A meeting of the above was held in Mr Rae-Howard’s rooms on Thursday night. Present; Messrs Morgan (President), Thos. Rimraer, M. Perreau, Dr Mandl, and the Secretary. Correspondence was read from the Railway Department, in reference to the Chamber’s application for increasing the train communication between Palmerston and Foxton at 9 a.m, on Wednesdays and Fridays, returning from Foxton to Palmerston at 3.30 p.m. The letter stated that the Minister had carefully investigated the matter, and stated (what the Chamber already knew) that there is considerably more than a daily service here, and that the returns of the traffic show that it is insufficient to justify additions being made to the present service; some of the trains were run at a loss, and the business is not improving to any appreciable extent. In conclusion, the Minister desired to state that when business increases to an extent sufficient to warrant the running of additional trains, he will have great pleasure in again reviewing the matter. —On the motion of Mr Perreau, it was decided to write to Mr Stevens, urging him to have a verandah erected at the local station.
A letter in reply was read from the Marine Department, re burning of trees and lupins at the Sanatorium, and stating that the matter had been brought under the notice of the Tourist Department, which has control of the Sanatorium.
A copy of resolution passed by the local Borough Council was read, expressing approval of the Chamber’s project re planting o:t trees on Arbor Day at the; Heads.
It was decided to observe Arbor Day for the purpose of tree planting at the Heads.
The Chamber decided to do all in its power to forward the establishment of a technical school in Fox ton.
A discussion took place re the poultry industry, and Dr Mandl pointed out the good that would result from a visit from the expert, Mr Hyde. Mr Perreau informed those present that there was a poultry association in Foxton. It was decided to ask the association to invite Mr Hyde to pay Foxton a visit, and deliver a lecture.
