PARLIAMENT.

Opened To-day.

The second session of the present Parliament was opened at Wellington this afternoon. Nearly all the members arrived by train and steamer last night. The usual ceremony was gone through, and the speech delivered by the Governor to the legislative Council and House of Representatives. Members anticipate a prolonged discussion on the tariff bill, especially over the cry of Town v. Country. It is confidently expected that very substantial reductions from the breakfast table point of view will be made in the tariff.

Speaking at the Wellington Town Hall last night, Sir Joseph Ward told his audience that when they read the Governor’s Speech they would find one item in it —he could not disclose it just then, as that would be improper—vvhich he was certain would give great; pleasure to all classes in the community. Pie was quite persuaded that when the people of this State realised what it was they would say we were moving forward, and in some respects doing good. He could only lead them up to the fringe ol the subject, but they would find an item in the Speech which would be a matter of satisfaction to every political class in New Zealand.
