THE WHIROKINO BRIDGE BRIDGE AND TOWN CLERK.

To the Editor. Sir, —In your report of the last meeting of the Foxton Borough Council, your paper stated that the Council passed a resolution in regard to the proposed repairs to the Whirokiuo bridge, to the effect that while the Council was in favour of the County Council effecting repairs, they had not confidence in the engineer, Mr Fulton. I noticed also in your report ol the meeting of the Manawatu County Council, that the Town Clerk, upon hearing an explanation from the Chairman of the County Council, waived on behalf of the local Council all objection to Mr Fulton. Now Sir , what I want to know is, by what authority can a Town Clerk rescind a resolution of the Council ? Is it a case of the tail wagging the dog?—Yours etc., Vigilant. To the Editor. Sir, —In your issue of the 20th inst., I read a notice to the effect that householders have to procure a five-gallon pan, and place in the W.C.’s within five days, or pro-, ceedings will be taken. Who is to stand the expense of this ? Is it the unfortunate tenant ? If so, I think it is something scandalous. What with the exorbitant rents we have to pay, and the hovels we have to live in, and the inconveniences we have to put up with, I think it is sufficient ; and now, on top of this, the Council wishes to compel us to practically put our landlord’s pioperty in a sanitary condition at our own expense. If such is the case, I presume it would be legal in the event of a tenant shifting into another house, to take their pan along with them, as they might have to pay out for another one. —Yours etc., Woodenhkad.
