LITTLE MEN.
Are little men penalised on account of their stature ? It would se;m that they are in the teaching profession. In spite of the long procession of distinguished little men which history furnishes, the Auckland Education Board decided that a candidate for a pupil teacher’s position could not be regarded with favour on account of his diminutive size. His aptitude and ability were unquestioned. “He is small and boyish, and his size is the only point against him.” Is it any wonder that as a general rule little men are pugnacious ? They apparently have to be if they wish to impress upon the . educational authorities the claims over matter, of merit over inches. In some of the school reading books there may occur the lines from Dr. Watts’ “ False Greatness,” in which the immortal author of the “Busy Bee” says something about the mind being the standard of the man. This may have escaped the notice of the Board.
