The Palmerston Winter Show opened to-day. The Presbyterian Ladies’ Social Guild will hold a social in the Masonic Hall, on Wednesday evening, 26th inst. A capital instrumental and vocal programme will be submitted, and refreshments provided. All sorts of games will be indulged in, and an excellent evening’s enjoyment is anticipated. Admission: 15, children half price.
Quite a number of local residents took advantage of the excursion fares to Palmerston to-day. A summoned meeting of the local Oddfellows Podge takes place to-night.
At the local Roman Catholic Church next Sunday evening a mission will be opened by the Rev. Father Rowhara.
Fred Foley, the great ventriloquist, conjurer and musician will re-appear in the local Public Hall, on Saturday evening next. Messrs O’Connor andTyderaan, the well-known watchmakers and jewellers of Palmerston North, insert a replace advertisement in this issue.
We acknowledge receipt of complimentray tickets from Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club, Manawatu A. and P. Association, and All Saints’ Choir concert. We remind Moutoa settlers of the meeting to be held in the Mayor’s rooms, Council Chambers, on Thursday next, to discuss the drainage question. The Manawatu and Foxton reps, will be entertained at dinner, at Hickson’s, by the Foxton SubUnion, after the game next Saturday. Invitations to attend have been extended to Messss B. G. Gower (Mayor), O. E. Austin, G. Coley, W. J. White, and Dr Mandl —all honorary officials of the SubUnion.
Mr M. H. Walker, grocer, etc., advertises in his space over leader, that all cash purchasers of articles to the value of 2s 6d and upwards, will have a chance in winning a double-barrel gun valued at £4, in addition to the usual discount allowed. Full particulars are set out in his advertisement. The first dance of a series to be held by the Valeta Quadrille Assembly, took place in the Masonic Hall last evening and was well attended. ’ A most enjoyable time was spent by all. The floor was in splendid order and the music supplied by Mr Berthold, was voted first class. Mr H. Bennett officiated as M.C. The next dance will be held on Monday, July Ist. At the Palmerston police court yesterday, John Sass pleaded guilty to having assaulted Bock Sim, a Chinaman, on June Bth. He acknowledged having been under the inflence of liquor at the time and expressed himself as being exceedingly sorry for what had occurred. The police said that the assault had been entirely unprovoked and had resulted in considerable damage to the Chinaman, who had to go to the Hospital for repairs. Defendant was fined 20s, half to go to the informant, Sim, with costs totalling £1 is, in default fourteen days’ imprisonment. The Minister of Bands has given a definite pronouncement on the details of the Band Begislation he intends bringing before Parliament. He intends to propose a heavy graduated tax on large estates in a special Taxaiion Bill; to frame another Bill providing for endowments ; and a third Bill dealing with the sixty-six years’ lease, concessions to lease-in-perpetuity tenants, and general amendments to the Band laws.
