INSPECTOR OF NUISANCES.

Condemns a number of buildings. The Council’s advice. At last night’s Borough Council meeting Mr A Jonson, the recently appointed Inspector of Nuisances, presented his report to the Council upon the sanitary condition of the borough and also waited personally upon the Council. He reported that certain privies had been condemned and rebuilt. He found the greatest trouble in the Main St. There were three places which had given him trouble and he was of opinion that the Magistrate would have to settle the matter. Otherwise, the borough was in a satisfactory condition. Mr Jonson then asked permission to orally elaborate his report. He stated, amidst the laughter of Councillors, that he couldn’t stand the “ tongueing of the women.” He had to laugh at them. There were half-a-dozen houses that were not fit for human habitation and should, be pulled down. One place was in a very bad state and was erected 45 years ago. Cr Hennessv said the Inspector should hail offenders before the Magistrate. He demanded to know from the Inspector who the offenders in Main St. were as several Councillors present had premises in Main St. The Inspector in reply to Cr Hennessy said his (Cr Hennessy’s) premises were clean. Cr Gray said that after the scathing things which had been reported in the papers he would also like the names of offending persons mentioned by the Inspector. Cr Frankland also desired to know the names of the half-dozen owners of these buildings which were unfit for human habitation. After further discussion the Inspector was instructed to give notice at once to dilapidated buildings persons on whose premises uw-havi nes existed and failing no action being taken to abate or remove same that Court proceedings be instituted.
