UNREST IN IRELAND.
Lawlessness and Terrorism. Law So lie Upheld. London June 6. The House of Lords has been two days discussing the condition of affairs in Ireland. Irish Peers produced testimony of increased lawlessness and terrorism. They said the object of the anti-grazing agitation was to force sales of land at prairie value. A remark that had been made by Mr R. D. Denman (private secretary to the PostmasterGeneral) that cattle driving was not a crime of ver} r serious nature, was severely criticisedLord Crewe (Lord President of the Council) explained that Mr Denman die! not intend to minimise such criminal disorderly acts. He merely argued that driving was less serious than maiming. Lord Crewe heartily agreed with Lord Londonderry that vindication of the law ought never to be regarded as a party question. He admitted that severe watchfulness was necessary, adding that the Government relied on the ordinary law. Lord Ripon (Lord Privy Seal) declared that the Government was determined to put into operation all the powers of law it possessed. “The Daily Chronicle’’ says Mr Denman’s remark was not very judicious. Driving may be used very effectively as a means of intimidation, and may lead to serious disorder. The anti-grazing movement is extending in the West of Ireland. Judge Wakely, at the Boyle Sessions, declared that the condition of Roscommon was deplore able. It was not what was expected in a civilised country. Such illegalities should be put down. King and Queen to Visit Dublin. London, June 6. King Edward and Queen Alexandra visit Dublin on July roth and nth. The- announcement is hailed with the greatest satisfaction in Ireland, and it is hoped the Sovereigns’ presence will have a quietening effect on the country.
