THE PULIC LIBRARY.
To the Editor. Sir, —In a recent issue of your paper I read a letter from a correspondent who signed himself “Interested,” in regard to the closing of the library without notitying the subscribers. I also saw Mr Wilson’s (the librarian) explanation. I expected to read a further reply from “Interested” in reply to Mr Wilson in your last issue, but was disappointed. Now, sir, it is clear to me that the setting up of a library committee by the Borough Council is nothing short of a farce if they do not investigate these matters. The librarian is a paid servant, and his duties should be carried out by an accredited assistant rather than that the subscribers should be disappointed. Did the librarian report his sickness to the committee ? I would like to ask the committee whether the librarian is subject to periodical attacks of sickness ? If so, whether they will appoint an assistant during his indisposition, and so save subscribers disappointment and loss of temper. Trusting you will publish the above, —I am etc., Also Interested.
