BROOKLYN TRAM ACCIDENT.
Wellington, May 11. The inquest on the victim of the Brooklyn tramway accident was resumed to-day. The jurors were taken for a trip on a car similar to that which met with the accident, and the working of the brakes was explained to them. Maher, a motorman, stated his experience on the Brooklyn line. He had forgotten to put the lever over before using the magnetic brake, and the car got away for a short distance, but he saw the oversight and quickly remedied it. Mr Richardson, the tramways engineer, said that from the first his impression was that the motorman had overlooked the reversing lever before using the magnetic brake. All the tests carried out pointed in this direction. He thought the error was due to the motorman speaking to the motorman on the up-car. The system of brakes used was a standard throughout the world. Wellington, May 14. A meeting of residents held in Full fords Hall last night appointed a deputation to wait upon the City Council, to affirm the disirability of duplicating the line. A resolution of sympathy was passed with Mr Thomas Bell in the loss he had sustained by the death of his wife in the recent accident. It was determined to urge the City Council to carry out the resolution of the meeting! at the earliest possible moment and thus prevent the possibility of a recurrence of such a sad accident.
