AN AMUSING INCIDENT.
Saturday’s Otago Daily Times says ; —An amusing little incident in connection with the Governor’s recent tour of Central Otago is going the rounds of the back-blocks. When his Excellency arrived at a hamlet in the Taieri Gorge well known to travellers by the fragrance of the cup of tea which is dispensed on the arrival of trains, he was most cordially greeted by a wellknown local celebrity, who subsequently proceeded with due formality to present the residents who were in attendance from far and near. In the excitement of the moment his memory was quite unequal to remembering all the names, and most of those who were not within the scope of his immediate acquaintance were dubbed Murphy (for the purpose of this paragraph). Some were Murphys and some were not, but that made no difference. The train was delayed, and, concluding his oration, the spokesman said he had |indeed been pleased to note that there had been a recent addition to his Excellency’s family. “Still,” was the good-humoured rejoinder, “we are not so numerous as the Murphys yet.’’
