FOXTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.
Installation of Mayor. A meeting of the Foxton Borough Council was held last night for the purpose of installing the Mayor and Councillors.. Present : —The Mayor (B. G. Gower Esq.) and Crs Hennessy, Baker, G, Coley, Gray, Hickson, Stiles and Wilson. The Mayor, Crs. Austin, Coley, Gray, Hennessy were appointed a Public Works Committee, Crs. Baker, Frankland, Wilson and Stiles were appointed a Library Committee. Crs. Hennessy, Coley, Wilson, Frankland, Hickson and Stiles were appointed a Reserves Committee. Crs. Stiles, Gray and the Mayor were authorised to sign cheques. On the motion of Crs Hennessy and Gray, Mr C. Spiers is to be given final notice to vacate pound property not later than Monday, and give up the key to Mr Tozer, and that all rent and fees for poundage be paid to the clerk forthwith. A lengthy discussion took place in reference to the nightsoil contractor. The contractor was in attendance, and it was decided that the Council go into committee in order to allow more freedom of discussion. Cr Coley took exception to this procedure, and to mark his displeasure, left the room. Cr Baker moved, and the Mayor seconded. That applications be invited for the position of nightsoilman, same to be in by the third Monday in May, at the weekly sum of ; duties to begin on Ist June. Further, that a special meeting be held on the said date in May, to receive applications. — : Carried. Proposed by Cr Wilson, and seconded by Cr Stiles, That this Council pay the present nightso.ilman the sum of £3 15s per week from the Ist April until a man shall be accepted by this Council from tenders to be called. The contractor to supply horse and feed. , —Carried. The Public Works Committee are to visit the streets in the Borough with a view to obtaining Palmerston metal for blinding rough roads and repairing generally. The date of inspection to be fixed at next meeting. The Clerk was instructed to interview Ganger Henderson, in order to ascertain if .some of the metal dredged from the river can be obtained from the Railway Department for use on the borough roads. On the motion of Crs Styles and Hennessy, it was decided to order 200yds of Palmerston metal at once, for repairing purposes. Cr Baker moved, and Cr Styles seconded, That the Stock Inspector be urged to insist on all owners within the borough destroying lupins and other noxious weeds. On the motion of Cr Hickson, seconded by Cr Baker, the ranger and lamplighter is to be given a month’s notice, and fresh applications be advertised for the position, to be in by, the third Monday in, May.—Carried. It was decided to engage the road grader, together with a man fer use on the borough roads. On the motion of Cr Wilson, the Inspector of Nuisances is to be in- - structed to notify, owners of trees which overhang the footpaths to trim them back at once. —Carried. The Council rose at 9.17 p.m.
