Hockey promises to stand out as a prominent pastime in Foxton this winter.

Railway excursion arrangements for the Palmerston races to be held on the 24th and 25th hist., are advertised in this issue. In the Methodist Church on Sunday the services will be conducted by the Rev. J. Southern. The evening subject will be, “Come and Welcome.” The chior will render an anthem.

Municipal elections ars causing much excitement in different parts of the colony at present. In two or three boroughs however, sufficient candidates to fill the vacancies on the Council were net forthcoming. The Rev- Mr Aitken will conduct morning service at the local Presbyterian church tomorrow. At an early date services will be conducted in this church twice on Sabbath instead of once as at present. MrP. H. Rae-Howard advertises for sale 478 acres of freehold land situate 2 miles from railway. The land contains 150 acres of flax suitable for milling. The price is ,£8,500. Easy terms. The property has not previously been put on the market.

It is the intention of the Railway Department to continue running a second through express from Dunedin to Chistchurch during the ensuing winter. By September a turbine steamer will be running three times a week between Wellington and Lyttelton. The Minister of Railways will then determine whether traffic warrants the continuance of a second express.

A prisoner from Blenheim named Andrew Maher was sentenced by Judge Cooper to two years imprisomeut on a charge of burglary. While travelling as a swagman he entered the station house at Parikawa, sixty miles from Blenheim, and when inside drank half a bottle of whisky and stole a number of articles.

Mosquitoes have been visiting Foxton in myriads during the current week. Old residents state that they have not previously known them to be so numerous. The delicate complexions of a number of young ladies have been temporarily marred. Infants in arms have also had a, bad time. In fact no one has escaped attack from the thirsty bloodsuckers. The building trade still remains very brisk in Foxton and there is a ready demand for four and sixroomed cottages. Good progress is being made with the schoolmaster’s new residence and Mr Brewer’s fine residence almost opposite the rope factory. This house is being erected on a rise and commands a splendid view of the river and surrounding country.

Our representative yesterday inspected a butcher’s cart, manufactured outright at Mr Barber’s establishment. The vehicle compares more than favourably with any cart of a similar kind manufactured in much advertised factories. The iornwork, body and delicate finish is an evidence of high-class workmanship and reflects the greatest credit upon the builder, Mr Richmond. The cart is built to the order of Mr C. T. Easton.

On Tuesday next the annual meeting of parishioners will be held in All Saints’ Schoolroom at 7.30 p.m. The balance-sheet will be read out and the election of Church Officers will take place. The Vicar will read bis report _ on things in general in bis parish. Both ladies and gentlemen are asked to attend, and it is hoped many will be present to hear how parochial affairs stand, and to show enthusiasm and interest in their Church. At the close of the meeting the ladies of All Saints Guild have kindly consented to provide light refreshments. The meeting of King Edward and King Emmanuel at Gaeta was most cordial. King Emmanuel boarded the Royal yacht Victoria and Albert and the two monarchs embraced each other repeatedly. The meeting has caused an explosion in the German Press.* The official view in Berlin is that the meeting need not arouse uneasiness, since Italy realises that her independence has a better safeguard in the Triple Alliance than if she relied wholly upon the support of Britain and France. A Shannon lad employed at Rikorangi recently picked up near Tehoro a purse containing nearly £7. Learning that the owner resided in Paekakariki the 'lad hiked there and returned the purse to the ownej - , who, wishing to encourage and reward honesty in a lad who had ridden over ten miles (same distance home again) to restore the lost money, offered the lad—sixpence. The lad proudly refused to accept any reward for his services. The election of a school committees throughout this district takes place on Monday night. Householders and their wives should make a point of being present. The meetings are to be held in the State schools.

A single young man, aged 25, named William Gould, was killed by a falling tree while bushfelling near Murchison (Nelson district). He sustained a severe fracture of the skull and lingered some 14 hours, mostly unconscious. He was a native of Pelorus, where his family reside. The following have been appointed to be members of Assessment Courts under the Government Valuation of Land Act: —: Kwen A. Campbell, Wanganui, Taranaki, and Rangitikei ; John Davies, Levin and Horowhenua ; John Mowlem, Foxton; John Hessey, Masterton ; John Cudby, Hutt and Johnsonville ; Donald J. Cameron, Pahiatua, Castlepoint, Akitio and Mauriceville. In the British House of Commons Mr Lawson Walton introduced a Bill to establish a Court of Criminal Appeal consisting of seven High Court Judges, who could allow or disallow an appeal on depositions and written statements submitted to them. The Court would be empowered, if necessary, to take fresh evidence, and also give prisoners in straightened circumstances the assistance of counsel.
