The Manawatu Herald. SATURDAY, APRIL 20, 1907. COUNCIL ELECTION.
The large number of candidates who have been nominated for seats on the Council is evidence that a more lively interest is about to be taken in our municipal life. From the plethora of candidates offering, burgesses should have no difficulty in choosing ‘ 1 nine good men and true,” possessing the necessary qualifications. All the old councillors excepting Cr Moore are in the field again. We regret that Cr Moore will not be a candidate this year, for his legal knowledge has been of valuable assistance to the Council in the past. To the old Council the best thanks of the burgesses are due for past services. Whether the people will again renew that confidence remains to be seen. The qualifications of the sitting members are too well known to call for comment on our part. We cannot deny however, that an 'infusion of new T blood would prove l beneficial. People should disabuse their minds of the idea that a life long residence in Foxton is the qualification for a seat on the Council. This conservative parochialism wants knocking on the head.
The new-comers who aspire to office are prominent townsmen, and have already proved to the
people, by their activity in public life, that they have the welfare of the town and its people at heart, and are doing their best to push Foxton forward. They are not “ birds of passage,” and deserve to be supported. We conscientiously believe that they would be a decided acquisition to the- Council, and we appeal to the enlightened ratepayers of the borough to carefully consider the high qualifications of these gentlemen. We cannot overlook the claims that Mr P. Hennessy has upon the electors. He owns considerable property in the borough, and can be relied upon, if elected, to check any attempt at squandering. He is a man who thoroughly sifts every question before committing himself. He should command the full confidence of the people, Mr Wilson is another candidate who merits hearty support.. He has resided in
the Borough from boyhood, and his success as a business man and his connection with other local affairs, well fits him for the position he is nominated for. We hope burgesses will carefully consider the claims of all those above referred to before making up their minds how they intend to vote on Wednesday.
