OBITUARY.
Mr Smith Succumbs to his Injuries. Mr E. M. Smith, M. H. R., met with an accident yesterday morning at New Plymouth. He boarded the morning train into town at Elliott Street, and almost immediately fell off the carriage platform sustaining very severe injuries to his head. He was removed to the hospital in a dazed state. A protracted operation was performed to relieve the concussion, without effect, Mr Smith succumbing in the presence of his family shortly before eight o’clock. Mr Smith represented New Plymouth from 1891 to 1896, and the Taranaki electorate from 1900 to the time of his death. He was 68 years of age. A Taranaki pioneer, he was one of the province’s most enterprising spirits. With the efforts to develop the ironsand and petroleum industries he has been prominently connected for over 40 years. Indeed, almost his whole life and fortune were dedicated to the former. With the removal of “LittleE. M.,” New Plymouth loses its most familiar figure.
