The Manawatu Herald. THURSDAY, APRIL 18, 1907. MUNICIPAL ELECTION.

Next Wednesday will prove a very lively day for Foxton. In the afternoon the famous Besses o’ th’ Barn Band will play on the Racecourse and between the hours of 9 a.m. and 7 p.m. the burgesses will be called upon to elect a Mayor and nine Councillors. The complete roll, which has left the printer’s hands, contains the names of 536 burgesses as against 447 whose names appeared- on the list at the last biennial election, which is an increase'of 89 votes. There are a number of residents, however, possessing the necessary qualifications, who did not make application to be put on the voters’ list. It is regrettable to know that Foxton possesses citizens who do not take sufficient interest in the town to desire a voice in its affairs. Every man and woman should exercise the right of citizenship and take an intelligent interest in selecting competent representatives to govern the borough. Every person who pays rates, directly or indirectly, should know how the trustees, for the time being, are husbanding the funds, what rates they are paying and why, and to occasionally discuss municipal affairs with councillors. If the ratepayers are indifferent the town is governed indifferently. Councillors reflect the intelligence of those who elect them. If Foxton is to keep in the van of progress then its people must brush away the cobwebs of indifference. Let the electors examine the names of candidates offering for the Mayoralty and Council before recording their votes on Weduesday. Banish sentiment and satisfy yourself with a sufficient reason why you are voting for .certain candidates. In our next issue we will briefly review the candidates offering,
