TENNIS
On Saturday last the.: return tennis match between the local Club and the Taonui Club took place at Foxton and resulted in a win for the Visitors by 11 games to sor 546 points to 530. Foxton was able to place a much stronger team on the courts than in the previous match whilst Taonui had a weaker team. As usual the the local ladies went down in the singles, with the exception of Mrs Robinson, who was successful by 30-25. In the Gent’s singles Foxton won two games out of five, Messrs Macdonald and Gordon getting home, the latter with a margin of 24 points. The Taonui team won every game in the Combined doubles. It was in these games that the lack of combination .showed itself. There is no doubt the games of the day, from a spectator’s point of view, were the gentlemen’s doubles, and the game of games, Marshall and Macdonald versus R. and N- Bailey. It was a treat to watch the tactics of the four players, and the Foxton pair deserve every praise for pulling the victory out of the'. fife,' after being at one stage of the game so far behind. There was only one ladies double played and this 1 was won by Taonui. The following are the detailed results the visitors being mentioned first- Ladies Singles— Misses E. Bailey and Wanklyn 30.21 Misses B. Bailey and Collins 30.21 Misses J. Bailey and P. Fraser 30.21 Miss U. Bailey and Mrs Robinson 24. 30.

During the afternoon a large number of people visited the courts Afternoon tea was dispensed by the ladies of the local Club.
TENNIS NOTES. [BT IBT] The return tennis match between Foxton and Taonui Clubs is now an event of the past, and as usual resulted in a win for the latter. Although Foxton lost a large number of games, the margin in points was very small. There is no doubt that since the previous match the style' of play of the local team has improved. X have noticed in these columns constant practice being advocated and this was borne out on Saturday. But there is another matter our players can take a lesson from the visitors in and that is combination. It was pitiable to watch one player leaving balls for the other in the doubles and combined games. Members cannot expect to combine together, if they do not practice together. Teams should be picked at-least 2 weeks before a match and then solid work should be indulged in-, . There are rumours of members^
practising on covered courts during the coming winter. If this is true, players should be in good form when the season opens.
P understand invitations are now being issued for the euchre party and dance which takes place on the 25 th inst! in aid of the Club’s funds. During the early part of the year it was decided to institute the ladder system of games, but I have been unable to obtain any information as to how the scheme is working. It has been decided to hold the next Wellington Provincial tournaments at Palmerston North,
