THE DEATH OF MISS HOWELL.
Inquest and Verdict.
MasTERTon, April 12
Considerable interest was created in Masterton to-day by the opening at 9.30 a.m of the inquest on the late Miss Victoria Howell, Mr W. P. James, S.M., presided. Inspector Ellison represented the police. Mr T. Wocd was foreman ot the jury. The Stipendiary Magistrate explained that it was usual in such cases as these to view the body, but under the provision of the Public Health Act, 1902, power was given for a certificate of death to be granted if it was dangerous to health to view the body. That had been done in this case. After hearing lengthly and expert evidence the jury, after a short absence, returned the following verdict: — That the deceased met her death from zinc-poisoning, caused by drinking water from a tank at Castlepoint ; and that no blame is attachable to anyone. The inquiry closed shortly before 6 p.m.
