HOCKEY.
We have received intimation that a hockey club is to be started in Foxton, and a meeting for that purpose is called for Thursday next in Mr J. W. Roughs’ rooms. There is every prospect of this healthful pastime being taken up with very much enthusiasum and already a large number of well known local sports have signified their intention of joining. Amongst those who will take part may be mentioned the following : —Mr Woods, who will coach the team, Messrs W. Gordon, J. Gillespie, S. Bainbridge, E. Marshall, G. Fowler, J. W. Rough, J. Jeffery, W. Mainwaring and C. McGaugh. Hockey is one of the good old English games and a sport we would be glad to have in our midst. Foxton is one of the few towns in New Zealand not embracing this healthful game. We would also like to see the ladies follow this lead and bring themselves into line with the ladies of other cities. We have reason to believe that Motoua will form a a club consequent upon Foxton doing so. Palmerston, Feilding, Rougotea, Motoua and other neighbouring towns ought to supply plenty ot competition for the local team. We hope to see Foxton blossom forth champions in at least one branch of sport and feel confident that with the material to work upon, hockey should bring Foxtrn well into the arena.
The motive of this article is .to encourage those not otherwise employed on their half-holiday to roll up in large numbers at the initial meeting of the proposed club.
