ROWING NOTES.
Regatta knocked on the head. Lethargic members. (By Enthusiast.) For some time past it [has been advertised through the medium of the press that the Manawatu Rowing Club would hold a regatta on May xst, in order to provide an atternoon’s amusement for the public and to ascertain the development of members rowing powers. The nominations tor the various events closed with the Secretary on the 10th inst. I am informed that a committee meeting was held last evening for the purpose of dealing with the nominations. But I am sorry to say that owing to the lack of enthusiasm displayed by the ever (never) ready members, sufficient inducement was not forthcoming to warrant holding the regatta. On the nominations being produced, it was ascertained that out of fifty-two active members only three woke up and showed their willingness to assist in what would have been a most enjoyable afternoon’s sport. It is pitiful to think that out of a membership of fifty-two members only three can be found who are not too tired or sleepy to take an interest in this splendid pastime. I am convinced that if the Manawatu Rowing Club are ever to hold regattas or produce from among its members men fit to represent our town in outside competitions, the M.R.C. will certainly have to draft into its ranks more enthusiastic and less lethargic members, than those who at present coustitue the membership. I, and no doubt many more, feel very disappointed at the lack of interest displayed in allowing the regatta to be abandoned, and in the future would not be surprised to hear of some of the so-called membeis of the Rowing Club being too tired to get out of bed, let alone exert themselves to the extent of pushing the club forward. So far as the long looked for regatta is concerned, the very —very —active members of the Manawatu Rowing Club have decided to sleep on and await the coming of the rising generation to uphold the honour and assist in laying the foundation on which a champion oarsman is built up. In conclusion I hope that when the boys now growing up are able to take a seat in a boat, may they prove more enthusiastic and better members than those of the present time—
Sleep on M.R.C., sleep on ! The season’s nearly done ; Sleep and dream of victories—the victories dreams have won. Heed not the call to arms
Or the praise for work that’s done, Sleep, ye tired members, M.R.C., sleep on 1
