GAS EXPLOSION.

Narrow Escape of Mr Half

and Assistant.

An explosion of gas happened at Whyte’s Hotel on Friday evening, which severely burnt Mr Hall about the face, and his assistant, Mr Rich, about the face, neck and arras.

It appears that the aceteylene gas generator had not been working satisfactorily for some time and Mr Hall decided to have it overhauled and cleaned on Friday, which was done. When the light was turned on in the hotel there was a flickering noticeable, and Mr Hall and the assistant went to the generator to examine it. No lights were used. More carbide was put in, and in unscrewing part of the generator an explosion took place, which blew Mr Hall into the yard and placed the assistant out of action. Both were stupefied for a time. The top of the shed was partlyblown off with the force of the explosion, and the building bears evidence of the accident. Mr Hall and the assistant were soon under medical treatment. It will be some time, however, before they recover from the injuries sustained, but both, we are pleased to state, are doing famously. It was a miraculous escape. How the accident really happened appears to be a mystery as no matches were struck.
