A CORRECTION.
To the Editor. Sir, —I observe by a paragraph which appeared in your issue of 16th inst., that the firm of which I am a member purchased and resold Whyte’s Hotel at Foxton. This statement is absolutely incorrect, as the firm in question has never purchased any hotel property. Where comments are made in the columns of the public press relating to the private business of public men, such as in this case, it is necessary that the facts shall be correctly stated. There can be only one impression left upon the public mind, viz,, that a general partnership exists between myself and my partners in the Moutoa estate in all transactions of whatsoever kind, outside- this estate. Such iS' hot the case. I shall therefore be. obliged] if you will kindly publish this' explanation and so remove the wrong impression conveyed by the paragraph in question.—l am, etc., John Stevens. jWe regret that Mr John Stevens’ name was mentioned as one ol
the proprietors of Whyte’s Hotel. We can assure Mr Stevens that the name of the Syndicate has been mentioned as proprietors of Whyte’s Hotel, and we accepted the same in good faith. We don’t know anything about the “impressions left on the public mind. ” It is customary for newspapers to chronicle changes in businesses, particularly in hotel property. If we have been misinformed as to the ownership of the hotel we hasten to make the correction. We had no motive beyond publishing the item as being of local interest, and we don’t care two straws whether John Stevens or two-thirds of the Moutoa syndicate or John Brown owns the hotel. — Ed. H.]
