ORGAN RECITAL.
The music loving portion of Foxton had a great treat afforded them on Tuesday night by the masterly rendering of several beautiful (and not wholly free from intricacy) pieces of music on the new organ in All Saint’s Church, by the Rev. S. J- Handover. That church is to be heartily congratulated on the magnificent organ it possesses. There was a very large attendance, and the collection, which was taken during the singing of the second hymn, should form an important factor in reducing the small existing debt on the instrument. Every piece rendered was thoroughly appreciated. There were six musical pieces, commencing with F. E. Bache’s “Introduction and Allegro, ” and, needless to say, full iustice was done to it. The second, “Priere et Berceuse” was another enjoyable instalment. Mr Handover then diverted the attention of his listeners to Gounod’s beautiful song, “ There is a Green Hill far away” and in this as in his second solo, “If with All Your Hearts,” demonstrated that as a possessor of a sweet tenor voice, well cultured, as a singer he was not far behind as an organist. The other three pieces on the programme kept the audience’s attention fully employed and when the proceedings were concluded everyone declared it to have been a most enjoyable treat and one very rarely indulged in in the town. Special praise must be accorded to the hew vicar, Rev. Mr. Woodward, for having persuaded the Rev Mr. Handover to come up from Wellington to give the parishioners such a treat. Mr Handover was loud in his praises of the new organ, being one of the best he has played on in any up-country township.
