A Settlement Effected.

The strike of slaughtermen in Canterbury is over, and the men will resume work on Monday morning. It was not until late yesterday that the prospects of a settlement seemed to show any signs of improvement, but the persistency of the spirit of mediation triumphed over all the difficulties. ‘ The credit for the settlement cannot be claimed for the Arbitration Act, says the N. Z. Times, but the spirit which made a settlement possible in the face of the most difficult circumstances was the spirit of agreement and conciliation upon which, the Act is founded.
