THE KAISER’S MENU
The Berlin correspondent of the “Daily Mail” reports that the Kaiser has issued orders to the officers of the German army to abandon their epicurean habits and to lead the simple life. The management's of the regimental messes have been officially instructed that, even when the Kaiser honours the officers with his presence at the table, the menu shall consist only of soup, fish vegetables, joint, butter and cheese. No liqueurs or other kind of afterdinner beverages are to be served, but the meal may be enlivened, the Kaiser says with one kind either of white or red wine, or punch, and a single glass of German champagneSince the issue of the order, it is sa : d, the Kaiser lunched with the Alexander Grenadier Guards in Berlin, and drank with gusto French champagne poured out of bottles with German labels. The Kaiser’s adherence to German champagne is no new thing. There is a story that when Prince Bismarck was one day dining with the Kaiser the Chancellor, after lifting his glass to his lips, suddenly put it down with an expression of ill-concealed disgust. On being asked what was the matter, Bismarck, after looking at the bottle said he could not stand German champagne. Then the Kaiser administered a rebuke. “ I always drink German champagne,” he said. “Firstly, because I have a large family growing up and I have to be economical, and secondly, from patriotic motives. ’ ’
