SCULLING.
“Victor” writes as follows in the Wanganui Herald : —With regard to the reply sent by Towns it appears very strange that the latter should be in any doubt as to what was meant by the cable sent on behalf of Webb. The fact that a race for the championship of the world was mentioned was quite sufficient, one would have thought, to have shown that if the champion’s terms were favourable it was meant to send. Webb across to Sydney. It was never thought for a moment that Towns would come over here and risk the championship on the Wanganui River. What Webb’s party really wanted to find out was whether it was true that Towns was going to retire, as had been stated in some Australian papers, and hand the championship over to his brother Charlie. Then again, it was felt advisable to let Towns know there was a probability of Webb being matched against him, or, if he were retiring, his brother. It only remains now to await the arrival of the letter with the conditions, and then a meeting of those interested in the matter will be held and the position discussed. I may state that there is every likelihood of a challenge being received in a few days by Webb from Mitchell for a race here, whilst Fogwell is also understood to be inclined to come here and tackle the New Zealand champion if suitable terms can be arrariged.
Sydney, March 10. Many rumours are current regarding developments in sculling matters. It is stated that Durnan is making overtures to row another race at Toronto, and that there is a possibility of the Towns brothers visiting Canada, where either George or Charlie will meet Durnan. When questioned on the subject of Charlie’s reported challenge to him, George Towns said he did not think there would be a race between them. This strengthens the report that George Towns intends to hand the championship to his brother Charles. Stanbury and R. Arnst, of New Zealand, are stated to be desirous of making a race with George Towns.
