The Orient, Aberdeen, and Lund lines have made a further reduction of £2 in the fares of assisted passages to New South Wales. The Daily Telegraph states that Mr E. H. Harriman (a prominent American railway director) and his friends, by forcing shares in the Reading Railway Company from 114 to 125 on the New York Stock Exchange yesterday, made several millions sterling profit.
Berlin, March 6
Herr Dernburg, Director of the German Colonial Department, will visit the Transvaal to study the results of British economic policy. London, March 7.
Reuter’s Agency reports that two thousand English and other dock labourers have been engaged to work at Hamburg, where the local men have refused to sign for day and night work. In the House of Commons yesterday a bill, introduced by Mr Jessie Collings, to promote peasant proprietorship, was read a first time.
