SHOT AT A WEDDING.
A remarkable tragedy, recalling some of the romances of the South of a hundred years ago, has just occurred in Atlanta, the capital of Georgia. Mr Harvey Hill, a prominent lawyer of the city, and grandson of ex-Senator Benjamin Hill, shot Mr Frank Ridley, junr., the son of a wealthy doctor, at the wedding of the latter’s cousin Ellie. The crime was a sequel to a romantic story. Hill has for a long time been deeply attached to Ridley’s sister Mary. Her parents opposed the snit for some reason known only to themselves, and Hill was forbidden to enter their house or speak to their daughter. The latter was one of Ellie’s bridesmaids. Hill and young Ridley among the guests. Before the ceremony Hill contrived to see Miss Ridley, and had a long confidential coversation with her. The girl’s brother surprised the couple, and asked Hill to speak to him for a moment on the lawn. There a violent quarrel ensued between the two men. Ridley angrily reminded Hill of his father’s wishes, and asked him by what right he paid addresses to his sister. Hill made an angry retort, and Ridley thereupon knocked him down. The latter jumped to his feet and drew a revolver, and fired two shots at Ridley. Both took effect, and little hope is lelt that he will recover. Hill threw away his revolver, re-entered the house, and told the guests what he had done. Then he walked calmly away, and gave himself up to the sheriff. Young Ridley was a great social favourite, and his friends threaten to lynch Hill.
