A BIG FIRE.

Freezing Works Destroyed.

Christchurch, March 6

A serious fire broke out at the Belfast Freezing Works early this evening.

The flames, fanned by a strong north-east wind, threatened to destroy the whole of the works. Several of the fire brigade engines from Christchurch went to check the conflagration. The fire was subdued by 10.50. Both the fellmongery and the wool store were totally destroyed.

The fire will not interfere with killing operations at the works. The fellmongery was burned down exactly eight years ago tonight, and the present building was the one erected after the fire.

The manager of the company could give no estimate of the loss to-night.
