THE OTAKI SENSATION.
Alleged Child Murder.
Committed for Trial.
At the Otaki Police Court yesterday, before Mr A. D. Thomson, S.M., Matilda Morris, a domestic servant, twenty-six years old, was charged with the murder of her illegitimate child. A boy three weeks old which was found buried in the Waitohu bush, near Otaki. The jury at the inquest on the body of the child found that death occurred on January 21st but that there was not sufficient evidence to show the actual cause of death.
The principal evidence, in addition to that given at the inquest, was in refutation of the story told by the prisoner to her friends' regarding her movements on January 21 st. The accused had, it appeared, told one witness that she had spent the afternoon at the railway station, and had told another that she had spent some lime at Mrs Auld’s boardinghouse. The psosecution produced witnesses who contradicted both statements. After hearing further evidence the Magistrate committed the prisoner to the Supreme Court for trial.
