WELL SINKING.
Some years ago settlers were content to give their sheep and cattle the free run of their farms but owing to the rapid rise in the price of land and the necessity of cultivation and improvement in order to obtain a larger revenue to keep pace with the times, owners are now compelled to fence off their land into sections. This has given rise to a new difficulty namely that of scarcity of water, as owing to the great amount of attention now requited to work the farms to the best advantage the necessary time cannot be given to the digging of wells and care of windmills and pumps and consequent worry and trouble ; and all the most prominent landholders have taken advantage of the facilities now available for sinking Artesian Wells, the deepest of which with the largest flows have been sunk by Mr George H. Blanche, of Jackeytowu, who started a few years ago with only one plant but with a long experience in well sinking. He has noiy three complete steam machines of the very latest pattern constantly employed and has just ordered a new 4 h.p. engine to still further increase the capacity of his machinery in order to comply with the constantly growing demand for his services. Next season he anticipates purchasing either one or more machines to work out in the country districts. One of which with its two attendants will have its headquarters at Foxton. Full particulars and prices may be obtained from either G. H. Blanche at Jackeytown or from Adam Burges, his Palmerston North agent in Rangitikei Street.
