IMPORTANT TO THE LOCAL CADET CORPS.
The Exhibition Trip. The Ist Battllion Wanganui Public School Cadets (Feilding, Palmerston and Foxton) will go into camp at the Exhibition on Thursday week, March 7th; to undergo a week’s training there in camp duties, and at the' same time visit the Exhibition daily. The advantages to be gained by the boys from an excursion of this kind, are manifold. They will learn the duties of volunteers ihcamp; they will widen their knowledge, not only by means of the Exhibition itself. but by becoming acquainted with other parts of the colony; and they will enjoy a good holiday, all the time being under complete care and control. To enable the scheme to be carried out it is essential —first, that at least a good proportion of the cadets are prepared to support it, second, that each cadet shall pay the sum ot 10s as a contribution to the general cost. For this sum the cadet will be provided with transport, bedding, and all other necessaries, so that the amount would be the total amount actually needed for him to expend. , The parenls should give the matter immediate attention and on Monday next consent to their sons’ going. They may rely on their being well looked after. The headmaster of the Foxton school will be the Adjutant of the Battalion and Mr Gordon will Captain the local corps. Parents, need therefore, have ifb fear that the Foxton boys will suffer for lack of attention. They will be under the immediate control 01 two .masters of theirown school, and in case of sickness will be attended by a medical officer without any extra charge. The Adjutant has had personal experienc&in camps of this kind, and he states that the health of the cadets in such circumstances is always excellent. The time is the best of the year, so there need be no anxiety as to the weather likely to be experienced. The proposal is the chance of a lifetime, and is certain to afford the best opportunity which the boys will have of visiting the Exhibition, with advantages to themselves and without anxiety or trouble to their parents. The small sum of ten shillings clears the cost of the train and steamer fare. Excellent accommodation and rations of the fullest order are provided free by the Department. The cadets will be quartered in the Exhibition grounds and the shows will be free to them. Major McLean was in Foxton yesterday making final arrangements; and he states that the battalion will number between three and four hundred cadets. The parent of every cadet is asked to acquaint the staff on Monday next of the probability or inability of his son’s attendance. Should by any reason, a boy be prevented from going, the father is most respectfully and sincerely asked to communicate frankly and privately with the headmaster who will en-' deavour to surmount difficulties. Old Boys can make arrangements for the trip by seeing the headmaster, paying ids., and putting in an hour’s drill every day.
The Rougotea post office narrowly l r escaped being destroyed by fire last night at 10.30 o’clock. A lamp in a vestibule fell and smashed and the lighted kerosene set fire to the woodwork. Very little damage!was done/ 1 '
