It is rather unfortunate the Rongotea sports concert and the Foxton Band concert dates clash next Wednesday, as several of the performers had promised to appear at both places. However, a combined party of Palmerston and Foxton amateurs will make the trip, and Foxtonians included are Miss Webb, Messrs Heagerty, Grace, Fowler and McEean. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. I. Jolly, Moderator of the Foxton church. The church was tastefully decorated and ffilled with interested spectators. The “ Clutha Free Press ” is an noyed because the Besses o’ th’ Barn Band passed by Balclulha in favour of Milton, for the ostensible reason that the latter town was “more central.’’ “It may be more central to a brewery,” snarls the Clutha illuminant, “ but not to anything else.” The Huia expedition will resume search for the remainder of the treasure lost in the wreck of the Klingamite at the Three Kings. The sentenced passed on Izard is generally regarded as being a remarkably lenient one, says the Greytown Standard. Considering the number and extent of the defalcations it was a matter of astonishment to many, when the maximum penalty had not been awarded. Purvis’ sentence of one year regarded in juxtaposition to Izard’s, seems comparatively heavy and all the more especially as Purvis made good his deficiencies.
“ The road to the beach is in a really bad state; will you try and arouse the authorities to a sense of their duty in putting it in decent order?" This is a question that has been forwarded us by a subscriber. Another subscriber directs attention to this matter in our correspondence column. Cr Barber is the member for this riding on the Council, and we feel sure he will do his best to get the matter attended to. Unquestionably it is the worst road, and one of the most used in the county. We hope something will be done by the County Council at its next meeting.
