Wellington, Yesterday. The following appointments have been made to the Upper House: — North Island : Mr W. W. McCardle, ■ farmer, Kawhia; Mr W. H. Tucker, farmer, Gisborne; Mr Wi Pere, farGisborne > Mr O. Samuel, lawyer, New Plymouth • Dr Collins, Wellington; Mr C. M. Luke, manufacturer, Wellington; Hamilton Gilmour,. retired, Wellington ; Robert Loughnan,.journalist, Wellington. South Island : George J. Smith, commercial man, Christchurch ; J ohn Barr, president of Trades and Labour Council, Christchurch ; John Ansty, farmer, South Canterbury; J. R. Sinclair, lawyer, Dunedin; J. T. Paul, ex-president Trades and Labour Council, Dunedin ; J. D. Callan, lawyer, Dunedin.
Speaking at the farewell tendered him by citizens of Wellington the Premier said it had been thought advisable to have these legal gentlemen included in the list, as at present the
Attorney-General was the only lawyer
in the Council, which, as a revisory body, should have the benefit of the experience of more legal members. He believed the Council, as now composed, would be found as efficient as any the colony ever bad.
