AN AMERICAN SENSATION.
1 The Trial of Harry Thaw.
New York, Jan. 24
Harry Thaw’s trial has begun. He is charged with murdering Stanford White, a wealthy American architect in Madison Square Garden, on account of-White’s behaviour towards Thaw’s wife. Two hundred jurors were summoned, but only two were empanelled yesterday, there being thirty objections. The prosecution insist that the jurors must return a verdict upon the written law and not be influenced by the so-called unwritten law of private vengeance.
In a trial in America a few weeks ago, it was held that a husband had a right according to the ‘ * unwritten law of private vengeance ” to take the life of another who traduced or insulted his wife. An accused person was actually acquitted on these grounds, and it was then announced that Thaw’s lawyers would rely on the same plea.
