IRISH AFFAIRS.

Speech by James Bryce.

London, Jan. 17

In the course of a speech at Newcastle yesterday, Mr James Bryce, who is retiring from the Chief Secretaryship of Ireland to become British Ambassador at Washington, urged tolerance and patience as regards Ireland. He said that those persons who were talking of separation were an insignificant minority. It would be wiser if the Irish members trusted the friendly Government more and acknowledged more cordially what it was trying to do for them.

Mr Bryce said education reforms were only possible by an Irish authority. He favoured giving the Irish people pretty wide powers in regard to expenditure.. He was convinced that large powers of selfgovernment would not be abused.
