MANAWATU COUNTY COUNCIL.

The regular monthly meeting of the Manawatu County Council was held on Wednesday last. Correspondence. The following letters were received : From Treasury, asking for balance of £949 193 id, interest on loans. From F. J. Hartley, blacksmith, Himatangi, staling that he had erected a blacksmith’s shop on the ground in Himatangi, instead of a piece of a railway reserve he had leased from Mr J. Groom, and asking the Council for a lease.

From Treasury, calling attention to alterations in Local Bodies Loans Act.

From Thos. Cook, Oroua Downs, calling attention to defective drainage in and around Oroua Downs Creamery.

From H. Sanson, asking Council to pay cost of transfer of land, £63 us, instead of £6O, as asked by the Coxmcil. From Treasury, notifying the special order made for special rate of £6OO, for continuance of drainage works in Oroua Downs estate had been gazetted.

from Department of labour, asking Council that they should decide a weekly half-holiday for the ensuing year. From T. W. Culling, Kongotea, request to purchase old rails and sleepers from Low Bros., and Nevill. From Messrs Dick and Geo. Farmer, Himrtangi, asking Council to raise loan of £SOO for construction of Kokuparo road. From Chairman of the Rangitikei County Council, enclosing report of the engineer of the working of traction engines for road work. From A. A. Wriggs, engineer, Auckland, referring to the merit of the steam shipping waggon for road metalling, etc. From Colonial Secretary’s office, copy of Local Government Bill, which it was proposed to introduce next session.

From Lands and Survey Depart ment, stating that £6O is 3d had been granted to the Council for river protective works in the Ohakea settlement.

From C. Tiggott, Moutoa, drawing attention to the dangerous place in river.

From Department of Roads, enclosing warrant to the Horowhenua County Council to construct bridge and protective works for the Mauawatu River at Shannon 1 TRAMWAY MANAGER’S REPORT.

The report stated that the debit balance for November was £l6 12s and the credit balance of December £22. The line men had almost completed the piece of line to be relayed from Rongotea, and a start with rails will soon bo made. Mr George has been employed to make sundry repairs to bridges. The wJhdmill was working very satisfactorily. Special trams ran on the Ist and 2nd January to the Bull’s race, and the fares exceeded the Racing Club’s guarantee. THE TREASURER’S REPORT.

The Treasurer reported as follows : —General account: Dr., £3135 5 s 6d 5 loan account, cr., £746 ns Bd. Amount available for expenditure in ridings to 31st March, 1907, as follows : —Sandon Riding, £l6 12s fid ; Waitohi, £165 3 s 4 d; Rougotea, £ls 2s 8d ; Carnarvon, £250 4s 4d; Whirokino, *4S fid. Amounts over-expended—Mt. Stewart, £6O 18s •; Kawa Kawa, £296 2s fid; Awahou. £35 8s fid; balance, dr., £3135 5 s 6d. Loan accoimt ' cr -> £756 ns Bd. ■
