SANITARY MATTERS AND OTHERWISE.

[to the editor J _ ||| - Sir. -The epistolary ebullitmnoPf “Disgusted” is, rather unfair ia% some respects, if not in all, as he makes no allowance for the huge task the new nightman has to contend with in overtaking the arrears of work left by his predecessors. I understand that the present man is doing his work well, and is gradually getting things back into a normal state, but anyone with brains must recognise that it is im- ' possible to do this all at once.- ‘ ‘ Disgusted ’ ’ mentions ‘ ‘ some quarters.” Is he quite sure that he is in the nigbtsoil area ? Again, is “Disgusted” quite free from malice, spite, spleen, etc., when he makes his sneer at the Councillors and their clerk ? I opine not, ofr*t if he is. ignorance in the wild statement that he makes. As a ratepayer who has always taken an interest in the doings of our Council I would like to mention one or two things that the Council deserve credit for, (besides the credit due to them for paying their clerk a salary more in accordance with the amount of work done than has been the case in the past). They have replaced two rotten bridges with solid concrete ones,'Ar one in the Avenue and one m Street, at a cost of over which has been done during the last two years, and done out of the ordinary revenue without saddling the ratepayers with the expense of poll, loan, or a long drawn out special rate, an achievement of which any local body might be proud. I did not get my estimate as above from the Town Clerk but am depending upon my memory, and I knowT am well within the mark. There is another under-. : taking that the present Council de-‘ serve every credit for, namely, the erection of new Public Library and Reading Room in the Council buildings. Everyone who knows the old rookery and compares it with the present accommodation are loud in their praises, especially the ratepayers who know the new buildings are not costing them a farthing more in rates. 'The Council have also succesde37w£t!r ' the able help of our member, Mr John Stevens, in getting the Government to amend the ‘‘Foxton Reserves Act,” which will now. ; enable the Council to expend surplus rent on the Victoria Yarkand : otherwise improve and beautify our town, and make it more attractive to visitors.

Now, Mr Editor, I hold no brief for the Councillors, but I do think it is rather hard on a body of men who are willing to devote their time and energies to the care of the ‘ place to have any splenetic disgusted snake in the grass''caffing on them to resign because hm par-' - ticular little trouble is not attended to, and I believe that present jmembers of the 'Council are, a-sl good men as any had yet, if not better. Eet Mr gusted come out of his shell and stand for election next April or May, whichever it is, and if 1 f think he is a better man than any of the Councillors (which at present -I doubt) he will get my vote and interest. I am, etc., Ratepayer.
