SANITARY MATTERS.

[to the editor)

Sir.—There is no doubt “ Disgusted” is right in some points that the nightsoil business is not being carried out satisfactorily, and there is a reason for it. There has been no less than three men in the last twelve months anci none of them have given the publ lie sati^£tmn l^l^jju6Sti6n _ to be asked of the Borough Council is, ” Can one man cope with thar work?” It is the Council’s dutyr to ascertain from the present nightman whether he can carry out the work without further assistance ; if not, let the Council give the man more assistance to enable him to carry out his duties more satisfactorily to the Council and to the ratepayers. Where the public health : .s at stake a matter of expense should not be considered. The-, present hot weather is sufficient proof to the town that the sanitary arrangements must not be neglected. And if it is found that the present rate levied, is not enough to cover the cost of removal, the ratepayers must submit to paying another id or 2d extra. Abusing the Council and the Town Clerk will not remedy the matte^l; The health of our wives children are at stake, and I a'm# still of the opinion that one man cannot do the work, owing to the scattered nature of the Borough and the distance of 2 miles that the nightsoil has to be carried. Further, I wish to say I do not think the Town Clerk is overpaid for his • services to the Borough Council. He has proved himself to be a trustworthy and efficient officer. We know that he did the work for the Council for 30s a week, then later for £2 a week in a very able ' manner, and I think he is fairly entitled to the rise the Borough Council has promised to give him in April, 1907. The workman is worthy of his hire. I am, etc., Geo. If ye.
