put through an examination, which merely consisted of lifting up the eyelid. Three of their number were set aside, .and subsequently locked up, but they, got ashore in the absence of the “guard.” The Australian is said to have been' five days hunting for work, but meeting a steward off the boat, he was told if he went back he would get a fair examination. He says he was not further examined, but was “bluffed” about a report having to be first sent in by the captain. The result was that he was locked up with.the two others referred to until the boat sailed, and was then told that he was to be deported because he was suffering from the troublesome eye affection, trachoma. He claims that he fulfilled all other requirements. Highly incensed at his treatment, and wishing to satisfy himself as to whether he was suffering from the disease stated, he submitted himself to medical examination at Auckland, and the doctor he consulted says the man has never had trachoma, and is absolutely free from any affection.
