FOXTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.

A special meeting of the above was held in the Council Chambers last evening to receive lenders for the carting, dog-tax collecting, lamplighting, and the ranging services for the year lgo7. Present His Worship the Mayor (B. G. Gower Esq.) Crs Coley Gray. Shadbolt, Hickson, Moore, Frankland, Stiles and Baker. Tenders were received from Messrs H. Bradcock for the dog-tax collecting service at Is per per dog, and from Hans Andresen at 10d for first 100 dogs over which Is per head. From Mr H. Coley at 15s per day for the borough carting. Five tenders were received for the lamplighting service—J. Wyeth at T 6 2; John McGill, £56; S. R. Leask, .£SO; H. Walls, £6O, and H. Andresen, £55 10s per annum. Tenderers for the borough ranging were Messrs H. Walls, Hans Andresen and John McGill. Cr Coley was of opinion that the Council should appoint a person who could cany out the lamplighting and the dog-tax collecting duties together.

Cr Baker did not agree.^ It was proposed by Cr Gray and seconded by Cr Coley that the tender for the dog-tax collecting bejgiven to Mr Bradcock at Is per head. Carried. Proposed by Cr Baker and seconded by the Mayor that Mr Leask be appointed lamplighter.—Not carried. An amendment that Mr H. Walls be given the lamplighting and ranging work was proposed by Cr Hickson and seconded by Cr Gray and carried. The Mayor proposed and Cr btiles seconded that Mr H. Coley's tender for the carting he accepted, subject to a month’s notice on either side Carried. Proposed by the Mayor and seconded by Cr Coley that the dog-tax for lgo7 be 10s but if paid before the 31st March this sum shall be reduced to ss,5 s , working dogs 2s 6d.—Carried. Proposed by Cr Baker and seconded by Cr Stiles that the new lamplighter be instructed to take over the lamps from the present lighter, at the present lighter’s termination of his duties m satisfactory order and condition. Carried. . , , An application for the mgbsoil work was received from Mr Tozer. Cr Frakland thought that considering the desperate state of the nightsoil work at present it would be well to accept the offer. Cr Baker spoke in a similar strain. It was proposed by Cr Stiles and seconded by Cr Gray that applications be called for the carrying out of the nightsoil duties, tenders to be in by Friday, 28th December. Not carried. An amendment proposed by Cr Frankland and seconded by Cr Moore, that Mr Tozer’s offer to execute the nightsoil duties be accepted, was carCorrespondence was received from Constable F. Woods, complaining of annoyance due to the late hours kept by billiard saloons, and asking if Council could not pass a bye-law compelling billiard saloons to close at ten o’clock. Proposed by Cr Gray and seconded by Cr Coley that Mr Woods be informed that the Borough Council have no bye-law at present with reference to closing billiard rooms at ten o’clock. Carried. In reference to a letter received from Messrs Levin and Co*, the following resolution, proposed by Cr Baker and seconded by Cr Coley, was carried ; “ That that portion of land at the rear ot the Council Chambers be advertised for sale by auction, first for freehold purchase, and secondly, failing to realise the Council’s reserve, the same be offered for leasehold in accordance with the Act. A letter was read from the Town Clerk, applying for an increase iij salary, and drawing comparisons between his salary and the amount ot work appertaining to his office, and that of the work and salaries of Town Clerks in boroughs of a similar size to Foxton. Also stating that he would be prepared to relinquish outside woik to the amount of £6O per annum should the Council increase his salary to the amount suggested to him by a Councillor. The matter was discussed m Committee. Proposed by Cr Frankland and seconded by Cr Coley that the Town Clerk’s salary be increased to £iys per annum, as from rat April next, it being on condition that he is on hand every day of the week. —Carried. Proposed by Cr Frankland and seconded by Cr Coley that Mr Brewer be told that proceedings will be taken against him, under the Act in that behalf, unless he complies with the Council’s stipulations within 14 days from date as to Frances street (late Emu street).
