The Timaru Post says; Though he says he is well enough, it is apparent that Mr Hall-Jones is not as well as his friends would like to see him. As a matter of fact his medical adviser has ordered him to take a complete rest for several weeks, but the order has not been obeyed. There is too much to do, the Minister says, to permit of rest just now. “ If I go into an auction marl to buy a ease of oranges,” said Dr. Thacker at Christcbnrcb on Friday, “lam glared at and scowled at by all the local fruit vendors. They object to my buying in the open market 100 oranges for half a crown instead of purchasing them from the shops at half a crown a dozen. The same thing applies to vegetables. Why should not people be able to buy a small sack of cabbages, cauliflowers, carrots, and so forth, for a shilling, rather than pay one shilling for three or four cauliflowers bought from a cart?’’

A somewhat startling statement was made by Eev. Father Francis at the annual Communion breakfast of the Hibernian Australasian Catholic Benefit Society, Adelaide, last Sunday week. He said that the Catholic Church should be strong and all powerful in this fair young sunny land. Let them not for one moment be deluded, There was no use in keeping the veil on their eyes when they were strong enough to tear it away. The Catholic Church would be strong and powerful, and rule this country before 50 years if the men of the Catholic Church were true to Catholicity. “The Hibernian Society,’’ continued the speaker,’’ was the backbone of the Church, so far as laymen were concerned, and was the support of the priest in every parish,”

Haywood paid a flying visit to Foxton yesterday. Together with Mrs and Miss Haywood he has been visiting the Exhibition and expresses himself well pleased with all he saw. He was delighted with the art gallery exhibits. He considers the Canadian Court the most attractive. It took the party a week to thoroughly “do” the big show. Meals, said Mr Haywood, can be obtained in the buildings at a shilling each. After what he had read in the papers he was surprised at the moderate charges. In Mr Haywood’s opinion the exhibition is well worth seeing. Houdan’s Entertainers appeared at the Public Hall on Thursday evening. The juggling equilibrium feats of Gazza was the cleverest performance ot its kind yet witnessed in Foxton. This artist is undoubtedly a marvel. Here is one ot his feats : He takes an ordinary billiard cue upon the tip of which is balanced a heavy cannon ball, balances the cue on his chin, with a quick movement of the hand knocks the cue away and catches the heavy ball between his shoulders. Several other feats are just as hair-raising and one feels a sigh of relief when he completes •his performance. Ranelli’s clever illusions, card tricks and ventriloquism were thoroughly enjoyed, and the musical tramp was immense. The Russian gaol breaker defied chains and padlocks and completely mystified his audience. When discussing the lamplightmg tender at last night’s Council meeting, condemning reference was made by Cr. Coley to a lamp close to his residence. Ilis eloquence waxed fast and furious and he wound up by stating that he would much like to purchase the lamp as g,n heirloom and hand it down to his descendants as a sample of the state of Foxton during the days of their forefather.
