FEDERAL POLITICS.
The Recent Elections.
Sydney, Dec. 14 The state of parties according to latest figures are :
SENATE
Anti-Socialists ... 13 Labour Socialists ... -6 No Ministerialists were elected.
REPRESENTATIVES. Anti-Socialists ... 32 Labour Socialists ... 26 Ministerialists ... 17 f fTwo of the Socialists leading for the SeiiTfte in South Australia hare been deposed by Sir Josiah Symon and Mr Warden, Anti-Socialists. The Labour Socialists won six seats in New South Wales.
Mr Sydney Sydney Smith was rejected at Macquarie. The Telegraph computes that, compared with the old House, the AntiSocialists and Labour-Socialists have gained a member each at the expense of the Ministerialists. In Victoria Mr Simeon Fraser (Anti-Socialist) heads the Senate poll. Mr McColl (Ministerialist), who retired from the House, is next, while the third place goes to Mr Tunnicliffo (Socialist) Ministers claim that they will have the support of the Victorian AntiSocialists in their proposal to revise the tariff.
It is expected Parliament will meet in the middle of February,
A striking feature of the election is the reverse sustained by Labour in Queensland. Three Anti-Socialists are in the van for the Senate. Mr W. Higgs (Labour) is fourth on the list, and may have a chance of coming up, but Mr A. Dawson is hopelessly defeated, while Messrs Culpin, Thomson and Wilkinson lost their seats. Mr Watson, the Labour leader, regards the reversal as only a passing phase. The Argus says Victoria declared against Socialism, which only gained one seat in Australia. Sir John Forrest won the first contested election of his political career.
Mr Reid bemoans the continuance of three parties, no one of which is able to carry on without the assistance of another. Ho is satisfied with the result of tho election generally, but is disappointed with tho voting in Now South Wales.
