TOWN CLERK’S SALARY.
At Monday night’s Council meeting the Town Clerk made application for an increase in his salary. He receives a salary of per annum for carrying out the duties of Town Clerk, borough valuer, borough treasurer, building surveyor, rate collector, returning officer, secretary to library and cemetery. His remuneration is lower than that of any Town Clerk of a borough the same size as Foxton in the colony—and for ought we know in the Australasian colonies. He is a very capable and efficient officer and we are pleased to note that the majority of councillors recognise him as such and have expressed themselves in favour of granting an increase before they go out of office. We have made inquiry and find that clerks in boroughs containing about the same population as Foxton are paid salaries ranging from ,£l5O to per annum and in many cases the
frork is not so arduous. Attached are a few comparisons—the population of Foxton is 1350 :
Eltham—Population 1500, salary £2OO and free to do sutside work; Marton —population 1500, salary clerical assistance roadmen under supervision, salary ; Cambridge—population 1050, . salary and clerical assistance promised ; Pahiatua,— population 1280, salary ; Lawrence—population 1170, salary * 0 ' V
