The Manawatu Herald. THURSDAY, DECEMBER 13, 1906. THE IZARD BANKRUPTCY.
Mr H. S. Izard, a solicitor of Greytown, whose bankruptcy created a sensation in the Wairarapa has brought several families to the verge of ruin. He was a solicitor who was held in the highest esteem and had the full confidence of a large number of clients. It is alleged that he has been a gambler of the “ plunging ” order. If this be true, and there is little reason to doubt it, it is further evidence of the necessity for stamping out the curse. Sir Joseph Ward, in speaking at Napier this week on the subject of gambling said ‘‘ he would endeavour to restrict it in the interests especially of young men.” He needn’t worry so much about the young men. Our educational system is moulding a generation of young fellows of high morality and as the years go by there will be very little room lor the gambling parasites. Young New Zealanders are attaining to higher ideals and the gambling octopus will have a very bad time at their hands in the years to come.
