THE TOWN CLERK’S SALARY.

At last night’s Council meeting the Town Clerk appled for an increase in salary, stating that he was overworked, having to take outside work on account of his small stipend. If the Council thought fit to increase his salary, he would sacrifice most of the supplementary work. The Mayor thought Mr Fraser was fully justified in his request, and said he had intended to bring the question of increase up himself at a later period, and he certainly thought that in view oi the increasing work in the Council, Mr Fraser was entitled to an increase in salary. Cr Shadbolt, while recognising the ability of the Clerk objected, stating that he thought the Council should obtain a person who was an engineer and could attend to the clerical duties as well. Crs Frankland and Moore disagreed with Cr Shadbolt, reiterating the sentiment expressed by the Mayor, and spoke in glowing terms of the capable and efficient manner in which the Clerk had carried out his work.

Cr Austin agreed with previous speakers, but thought that the question should be left until the meeting in February, and that the Councillors discuss the matter with Mr Fraser in his office. He thought they would have to go a long way to get a better man.

The matter has been left for the Councillors’ consideration.
