ENTERTAINING THE ATTOR-NEY-GENERAL.
>•* ■ k ♦ 11 WmiNGTON, Dec. 6. A gathering organised for the purpose of congratulating D* Findlay on his appointment to the Ministry was held at the Town Hall to-night. There was a large attendance. Sir Joseph Ward in the course of a speech, said the financial results for the eight mouths of the financial year just past were better than for the corresponding period of the previous year. The preseflf position with regard to native land could not be allowed to continue. There must be a system by which .Europeans would be enabled to settle upon the large tracts in the North Island in a manner satisfactory to the Maori race. For that reason he was not sure whether it would not be best to appoint a commission to investigate the whole ppsition jiLnative lands, with a viw-vMjßft'vding sufficient for the.. setting aside a balance for deposition. Sir J’oseph took the Opportunity of denying the statement that on going to London he would not return. Sir Joseph had a very cordial reception, and Bt Findlay in responding to what had been said by previous speakers, was warmly applauded.
